In “A&P”, John Updike wrote a short story about a male clerk at A&P grocery, named Sammy, who worked at a hot summer day shift when three young women in his age entered the store only in swimsuits to purchase some snacks. Even though shirts and shoes are required, Sammy did not report on the girls to the manager, but instead he allowed them to continue shopping as he looked and imagined the girls based on their appearance. As Sammy watched, Lengel, the store manager, felt that the three girls did not had shirts and shoes on, reprimanded them the rules, which the manager thought Sammy reported on them. Those girls were dressed very inappropriately because of many reasons, including these: It has always been a rule amongst stores to not go in dressed like that, people will judge based off of what people dress like, and they need to be setting a better example for the little kids that may be watching them. At the beginning of the story, Sammy is ringing a woman up who when the three girls in bathing suits walk in he can’t recall if he rung up the woman’s HiHo crackers.

Through Lengel’s actions and one of the girls be referred to as Queenie, the reader becomes aware of how judgmental society is toward females. Sammy decides to quit his job in order to impress the girl “Queenie.” Unfortunately, his gentlemanly act goes unnoticed by Queenie and her friends, and he has no choice but to face the consequences of his action. The author of the story clarifies that Sammy’s immaturity comes from his judgmental attitude, sexist beliefs, and disrespectful attitude.

Throughout the novel, Kasey makes the readers question whether these people were so different that they needed to be treated in a special manner, or if they were only different from the majority of society who took the easy way out by placing them in an institute and forgetting about them. This novel served as an inspiration to many, and continues to have people questioning authority, and more importantly, questioning insanity to this day. Ken Kesey shows that the line drawn between sanity and insanity is based entirely on individual perception, and it is difficult to determine exactly where that line should be drawn.
