“A Peace of the Strong”, written by Stella Ghervas, takes a look back on the causes and effects of the Congress of Vienna. Held in lieu of the defeat of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna convened between the Great Powers (Great Britain, Russia, Austria, and Prussia) and the other European states in order to restore the peace in Europe that was destroyed through Napoleon's wars. The Congress of Vienna was instrumental in the reforming of the Utrecht system; a system built on a “balance of powers” between the Great Powers. Under this system there were two opposing military alliances, however, the system was effectually destroyed through Napoleon's large scale conquest.
