The Struggle for Freedom This historical fiction book, A Picture of Freedom, by Patricia C. McKissack, is a very good book that keeps readers interested in the book. It is a much-realized book from that time period. It is part of the series, Dear America. It is a diary of Clotee, a slave girl. This book takes place in 1859 in Belmont Plantation in Virginia. It is about a 12-year-old slave girl, named Clotty that has been forced to work on a plantation in the south. Her mom died when she was a young girl and others have taken her in. Colette finds out that there's a new tutor. He has a secret as well. He is an abolisher. He is helping slaves go up to the North for freedom. Many slaves are getting consequences, but she has to make sure that nobody finds out about her or the tutor. Colette wants to use her advantages to getting herself and friends out of the misery of their lives and to freedom. One thing I that the author did well was she kept people on their feet. She kept the story very interesting created suspicion that kept me wanting to read more. I think this is one of the author’s strengths in the story because she creates suspension so she doesn't come out. She gave details and describes it and we have to try to figure it out and then eventually she tells us. This kept me very intrigued and interested in this book. Another thing I liked about this book is that it comes from the main character Clotee’s point of view. I think it is much easier to read when it is from one character's point of view. I think that is a strength of this book but also a weakness. I think it's a strength because it tells you everything from the eyes of the main character in her feelings and thoughts throughout this whole adventure she takes. But I also think it's a weakness because you can don't get to hear the other people and point of view. You don't get to know their feelings. Overall I think that I liked the book with only the main character's point of
