In the discussion, How Big a Deal Is It That an N.B.A. Player Came Out as Gay?, the first major sport athlete comes out gay. His name is Jason Collins and is a center for the Washington Wizards. There have been other athletes come out gay, but they have all bee after their careers. Everyone has different opinions on this topic and Mr. Collins received support and criticism. In my opinion this is a big deal. I will talk about how players will feel uncomfortable, how moral views will be impacted, and how the world will react.
Jason Collins could become the first player to come out gay and still be active on a roster. This would be a first for the gay community, but he has to get a contract first. General managers will have to know how their team will feel on this topic and if the players will be comfortable around him. As a team everyone will be together for a majority of the year and will be traveling everywhere with each other. Since everyone knows his decision now, people will not want to hang with him anymore which might push the team apart.
In the sports community many people are religious and thank God for giving them the opportunity to be where they are. Being gay is a sin and is a rebellion to God and Jesus Christ.
