Jeaniene Frost once said, “People can perfect whatever facade they want, but everyone holds their sins close to their skin”. This quote relates to The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. They both talk about the action of putting out to the world that you are someone else different than who you actually are, but your secrets always stay lurking in the background. The Great Gatsby is trying to show that putting out a facade of someone who you aren’t can have dire consequences. One character who puts up a facade is Jay Gatsby.

This quote speaks about how having expectations about the future based on the passed no matter how hard we try always brings us back to the past, and that can be dangerous as discovered in this book. He didn’t know how to win Daisy over, but that didn’t stop him from trying and searching.

Fitzgerald creates a society where his characters are developed based on their aspirations to succeed. The novel focuses on the story of Jay Gatsby, and how his ultimate goal to find love consumes his life. Throughout the novel, Gatsby formulates plans to reconnect with Daisy, such as hosting lavish parties and inviting her to tea.
After the revelation of Gatsby’s background, he is dejected by the outcome of his plans, and his efforts to achieve them amount to nothing. He decides to place distance between himself and Daisy, persevering and enduring the long process it will take to revert to the past. Gatsby continues to be hopeful in reigniting his dream, “clutching at some last hope.” (158) By removing the pressure and his desperation to be with Daisy, Gatsby believes that she will come back and fulfill the dream she abandoned with Gatsby once more.

While the novel may seem to take a critical look at the old wealth of America in the roaring twenties if we use a New Historicist approach with a focus on subversion and containment then we see the book in a new light.
