A Psychological Disorder in a Show
The Netflix Kdrama, The Glory, accurately portrays PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) in one’s life. In the first episode, we are shown a scene of a group of four students who bully an innocent pupil, the main character, Moon Dong-eun, in the school gym. One of the female students in that group, Lim Ji-Yeon, sears Dong-Eun’s arms and legs with a curling iron while the audience listens to the burning flesh and the thunderous screams from Dong-Eun. Furthermore, the bullies forcefully hold a terrified Dong-Eun down while another person sexually abuses her. Now in their thirties, Dong-Eun, enveloped with burn scars, seeks revenge on that friend group who tortured her as a teenager. Many parts of the show imply that Dong-Eun suffers from PTSD throughout her life, though it’s hardly mentioned in the drama. In the sixth episode, Dong-Eun sneaks into a building to gather evidence towards a murder. Only then, she sees a group of men around a burner of sizzling pork.
The sizzling sound from the pork she heard triggered a flashback to her as a student; the sound of flesh grilled by a curling iron ran through her head. The effects of maternal parenting stress on children’s aggression and anxiety/ depression were stronger for children with low (vs. high) self-regulation (Choi, 2022). In the drama, it’s shown that the mother was abusive and inflicted poorly on young Dong-Eun. This was a major factor in Dong-Eun's anxiety and social anxiety in school. In Dong-Eun’s case, she had high self-regulation and knew what path she wanted to take in life.
