Title

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, the character Beneatha has a dream of becoming a doctor but faces conflicts of poverty and lack of support from her brother; ultimately finding happiness and continuing her dream, demonstrating that in life, you have to be resilient and find those who support you.
Beneatha dreams of going to medical school and becoming a doctor. Benetha Younger is a 20-year-old African American who aspires to be a doctor. She is the daughter of Big Walter and Lena Younger and a sister to Walter Younger. Toward the end of the play, Walter is talking to Mr.Linder and is talking about the Younger family. He talks about his son, Travis, and also talks about Beneatha and tells Mr.Linder, “And that’s my sister over there and she’s going to be a doctor- and we are very proud-” (148). When Walter says this to Mr.Linder in front of Beneatha, it is really important because he is showing how he does support her dreams of becoming a doctor. He uses the word “very” when telling Mr.Linder how proud he is of his sister. At the very end of the play, the Younger family is moving out of their small apartment into a house. When packing things up and starting to leave the house, Beneatha tells Mama, “To go to Africa, Mama- be a doctor in Africa…” (150). Beneatha is fulfilling her dreams differently. Not only will she be able to be a doctor but she is also going to be helping people, which is what her heart wants to do. Beneatha will also go to Africa with Asagai, who supports her and loves her so she will not only be fulfilling her dreams of becoming a doctor but will also have some happiness in her life by finding her lover. Beneatha faced a lot of obstacles when trying to become a doctor but she was able to preserve and continue working hard. Beneatha also shows that you have to find a good level of work and happiness, for example, Asagai. She can continue to be a doctor in Africa but she will also be happy with the one she loves. Lastly, Beneatha’s dream teaches those to find people who support them. Asagai supported her and Walter and her family also supported her towards the end of the play.
