In Unit 2 the struggles of African Americans in ameriCA was discussed. 4 films were shown that enduced an emotion response int the veiwers. Each film precisely captured the African American plight under the abusive rule of their whie counterparts and the troubles the face within their own race. Through out this piece the internal division in the black community , socioeconomic class discrimination and gender roles will be discussed .
The first film shown was “ A raisin in the sun” starring Sidney Potier as walter lee younger. Walter lee a young man living on the south side of Chicago struggles with accepting his position in life. boys in the hood was a chronicle on the lives of a group of friends in thei pursuit to survive the rough streets of la in the 1990’s . the film dove into the systematic extermination of black in the rough neighborhoods. By asking the provactive questions like why s there a liquor store on every corner in the hood and not in Beverly hills and why nobody seemed to be paying attention to the genocide happening in the hood the directi=or john singleton highlights the racial discrimination that is still evident today in a way that not only enteratianied the verys but triogger and internal reflection within them
The third film shown “ in the heat of the night “ tells the story of virgil tibbs a philedelphia police officer cauht in the wrong place at the wrong time. On his way back to philly from Mississippi he is arwssted without question and thrown head first into a high profile murder case. Quickly he turns from the suspect to the lead detective in the murder of a high profile contracter. As he works with the local police he becomes friends with the police chief Gillespie. And the two form a friendship as they each put aside their personal biases to solve the murder
