Tough love in chicago In the play A raisin in the sun by Lorraine Hansberry, written in 1959, is a very interesting and very loving/caring story. A Raisin in the Sun is a play about a few weeks in the life of the an African-American family living on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. When the play opens, the Youngers are about to receive an insurance check for $10,000. This money comes from the deceased father’s life insurance policy. Each of the adult members of the family has an idea as to what he or she would like to do with this money. Ruth and mama shows love through their close relationship. Although Ruth wanted to have the baby, she had to sacrifice the baby and she morally said,“yes i would too, Walter. (pause). i gave her a five dollar payment.” This quote plays a very good example which portrays love and affection because Ruth had to make a very difficult decision in order to support her family.
