Mama has a difficult decision on whom to give the money to when she receives $10,000 from her husband's death. There is a problem that Mama has come across, it is the decision either to give the money to Walter for his liquor store, or to give Beneatha the money for college. Mama also has her own idea to buy a house to solve their living situation. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, Walter should get the money to buy the liquor store. This is because it will benefit him and the family. Walter will also gain respect from his family.
Strategically, Walter tries to convince Ruth to tell Mama to give him the money for the liquor store. According to the play, Walter says,“ Charlie Atkins was just a good for nothing loudmouth too wasn't he. He wanted me to go into the dry cleaning business with him, and now he's grossing one hundred thousand dollars a year.”(Hansberry). In other words, as stated in A Raisin in the Sun, Charlie Atkins was one of Walters' friends that Ruth thought was just a good for nothing loudmouth. Walter uses him as an example to convince Ruth that if they get the money for the liquor store, they can make what Charlie Atkins makes, and they will be able to live a better life.
