In the book, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, the main character Walter and his Mama had a complicated relationship because of money. Are you wondering what caused this struggle between a mother and her son? Mama was a happy person overall. She wanted to live a happy life, but then she received 10,000 dollars from her husband's death. Once Walter heard about the money, he wanted it all to himself to start his own business. Mama was disappointed when she found out that Walter wanted to start a liquor store business. In the beginning Walter didn’t have respect for Mama or his wife, Ruth. In the text Mama told Walter, “[There is] something eating you up like a crazy man. Something more than me not giving you this money. The past few years I have been watching it happen to you. You get all nervous acting kind of wild in the eyes” (Hansberry 72). This shows that mama is trying to look out for her son and see what is going on with him in his life. This quote also reveals that Walter was only focusing on himself and not what his family wants. Another example in the text shows that Mama wants Walter to step up for his family and support his wife in her new pregnancy. Mama says “Be the man [your father was]....Your wife says she is going to destroy your child. And I'm waiting to hear you talk like him and say we are a people who give children life, not who destroy them” (Hansberry 75). This shows that Mama wants Walter to talk to his wife about this baby and tell her not to give up on this child. We can also see that Walter is not caring about his wife’s pregnancy, and only caring about his business plans. Linder they were keeping the house and she kicked him out and wanted to leave right away but forget her plant in the room knowing she loves the plant. In the text it says “ I am afraid you don’t understand. My son said we was going to move and there ain't nothing left for me to say”(Hansberry, 148-149). This shows Mama is surprised on Walter's action and is happy that her son changed her mind on what he decided to do. Another example in the text says “Ain’t it the truth! Look at all of this mess. Ruth, put Travis’ jacket on him . . . Walter Lee, fix your tie and tuck your shirt in, you look like somebody’s hoodlum! Lord have mercy, where is my plant?”(Hansberry, 149). This shows Mama is happy because they are moving into the house and she wants everybody to look representable. Therefore, Mama was so impressed with Walter and so happy that Walter chose to keep the house
