As Mama’s only son, Ruth’s husband, Travis’s caring father, and Beneatha’s brother, Walter is a protagonist and antagonist in the play. Walters mistakes throughout the play affected the whole family but seems to find a way to fix everything. Parts of the story it seemed as Walter really wants to provide for his family but isn't earning enough to do so but towards the end he starts changing his perspective on things happening around him. The sixty-year-old mother of the family, is waiting for a $10,000 insurance check from the death of her husband once she has the money she goes out and puts a down payment for a house. The next day there was a knock on the door it was one of his friends that was in the whole investment thing and tells Walter the other partner had runned off with the money being the angry Walter he is he starts getting really angry. The money being stolen really affected the whole family especially the sister because she was going to attend school with that money and she lost it all. After the money being stolen Walter then realizes that he cannot raise the family up from being poor alone, and he finds strength in being together with his family because having a family that stays together can accomplish big things. What Walter does not know is his wife is expecting a baby on the way but she doesn't want to tell Walter because she thinks Walter isn't going to be to happy about it due to everything has happened to him. In the beginning of the play Walter is stressing and worried about his family being financially unstable and his only solutions would be having more money to solve their problems. Once the money is gone he than realizes having a house is more important for the families welfare than being rich quickly. I believe towards the end of the play walter starts being more alert on things happening around
