Homeland Security Paper All three of these shows, are a reflection of the social climate in which they were created. I Led Three Lives profits from the fear and paranoia surrounding the Red Scare, and everyone’s desire to feel like there was someone out there keeping them safe on the home front. 24, though initially supposed to be a hypothetical terror on American soil story, ended up giving an angry and scared American public a no holds barred hero who would stop at nothing to keep them safe. This is exactly what the American people needed after 9/11, they needed to see someone fighting not only the bad guys abroad but those at home and even taking on the bureaucracy that many blamed for not keeping them safe. Finally, Person of Interest, focuses on the fear surrounding ever advancing technology, and our ever-decreasing amount of privacy. In I Led Three Lives, the enemy is of course the communist party, however, those in the party are everyday people living ordinary lives, they are friends and neighbors and family members which explains why there isn’t as much violence in the take down of these characters. It also adds an extra terror factor to the show, expressing the idea that the enemy could be right next to you. This was also a plot point for 24. However, unlike in I Led Three Lives, it didn’t matter how close the characters were in the story, it didn’t matter if they had been best friends for year, they were met with the same if not more extreme treatment than any other enemy that Jack needed information from. The same went for the enemy in Person of Interest, while they weren’t as sadistic as Jack, the characters were not above killing and manipulating people to save themselves and
