President Carter gave this acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 15, 1976. He was accepting the party’s nomination for president. The tone of his speech was optimistic and encouraging. President Carter said that “this will be the year we give the government… back to the people. ” This had to be inspiring to his Democratic audience because of the recent illegal actions of President Richard Nixon.
The language is with a lot repeats. By repeating” YOU” it makes the audience feel important, and it makes them feel, that George is one of them, and makes them remember the message in the speech. He makes them feel, that he knows, what kind of situation there are in. To get the message of the speech out so wide as possible he uses repetition. He keeps repeating the important messages.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States and attended Columbia Law School as well as Harvard University. During his presidency, the United States was blindsided by a malicious attack from Japanese forces at Pearl Harbor. In his address to the Nation speech that followed, he effectively convinces the American people and Congress that war on Japan is the best option by using strong word choice and a sense of nationalism to draw emotion from his audience. These appeals to pathos, along with integrating a clear call-to-action for the American people, creates an effective argument for his speech.
While re-watching some of Donald Trump’s speeches that he gives during his “Presidential campaign”, I noticed just how much he uses Aristotle’s three appeals. This method are both hurting and helping him at the same time. He uses pathos or the emotional appeal quite frequently. Donald has a specific target audience that he appeals to when he says that he is speaking to America. I feel as if his demographic is older white people who feel as if their country is no longer what it used to be.
