Charles Baudelaire’s article, a painter of modern life, critics of what he feels modernism is. In his article, Charles Baudelaire uses a figure of a man he knows who is unique, worldly and a present observer to represent what he believes is an idealistic portrait of modernism. Charles begins talking about general beauty and particular beauty and his ideals, which he favors particular beauty than general. Baudelaire connects particular beauty with the figure of a man, he calls Monsieur G.; who by Baudelaire describes this sketcher as being unique and original. Monsieur G. actions like not wanting to seek approval and not signing his name. Which connects back to particular beauty. In particular beauty it’s more about the “essential quality of being present” This particular beauty connects to a person Baudelaire calls Monsieur G. Monsieur G. has unique qualities that make up particular beauty and the overall context, modernism. Which according to Baudelaire modernity is ephemeral . One of the unique qualities of this artist is that he does not seek approval, so he doesn’t sign his name but according to Baudelaire you can tell it’s made by him because of the “dazzling soul” put into his artwork. Which connects back to particular beauty, for example Baudelaire talks about series of fashion plates from the revolution. He explains that they are beautiful because they are drawn with wit and the aesthetic feeling.
