During a time of mourning, Earl Spencer, made a speech to his audience in memory of his sister Diana. In this speech, Spencer talks about Diana’s passing and courageous character. He talks about how she has influenced many people throughout her lifetime. Throughout the speech he uses euphemism to respectfully talk about her passing. He also uses allusion to show how she was able to even in her last days leave behind a mark of excellence. In the Earl Spencer eulogy, he talks about Diana’s death and how in a time of mourn we should remember her for her boundless energy and charitable qualities. Throughout the speech Earl Spencer reflects back to how Diana was as a person. He talks about her genuine kindness when interacting with others. He shows that when he says, “pay our respects” as a more subtle way of talking about her burial (Spencer1). Spencer uses euphemism to help soften the idea of Diana’s death. It helps the audience feel more respect toward Diana. He also uses it when he says she had a “…deep feeling of unworthiness” when he was talking about depression (Spencer1). He reminds the audience with this quote about her battle against reality. She had a standard that she had to meet because of her role as a princess. He explains that she loved her position as princess, but is sometimes caused for her to do things she didn’t always want to do. Because Spencer uses euphemism throughout the eulogy, it shows he has a kind heart for Diana. By using euphemism it helps the reader to understand her death in a more subtle way. Spencer knows that the audience is still hurt by her passing so he makes his speech as nice as gentle as possible.
