A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Flyer From Prism Youth Community

While I was walking through Fountain Square Mall, I passed by a lawyer’s office with this flyer from Prism Youth Community in the window. Before I even realized which organization created it, I was immediately drawn to the beautifully designed document. A second later, I was super excited to discover that it was created for the LGBTQA social group founded by one of my instructors, Laura Ingram. The designers have clearly identified and worked to produce a meaningful hierarchy of information for its audience. To a greater degree than many of the professional documents I’ve seen in community settings, this flyer apparently has specific, well-defined rhetorical purposes, likely due to the greater implications it could have for youth in the community …show more content…

The first element of the document that I noticed was the rainbow of colors, which for many people—especially those within the LGBTQA community—, now instantly signifies support for non-binary gender and sexual identities. The perception of this welcoming message is followed by the triangle, which also subliminally communicates support for these individuals. Through its bottom edge that borders the start of the document’s text field, the triangle also serves as a tool for drawing attention to the next block of information— the text announcing “Safe Space.” In addition to the triangle, the use of emphasis expresses that this phrase should be noticed next in the hierarchy of information. In contrast to the other textual information, these two words are in all caps and are much larger. This design choice is quite effective in accomplishing the rhetorical goals of communicating safety because the other contributing text fields of the document, while important, are not necessary to conveying safety. This is why, for instance, the designers decide not to give the beginning of the statement, “I want to create a safe space,” the same weight as the end of
