From the listening, the professor explains that emotional appeals are to manipulate or control our emotion. And he also says that advertisers use different techniques to persuade us to buy. In the reading, there are two examples about the emotional appeals. The one is Jacko, who is one of the most famous Australian football players.
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Jasper Jonosky Analytical Reading and Writing Professor Faunce 8 Feb. 2023 Rhetorical Analysis of The White Space In Elijah Anderson's The White Space, he effectively demonstrates issues of systemic racism in America through multiple types of rhetoric. Anderson is a sociologist and a professor at Yale University, who wrote The White Space in 2015 to highlight the modern-day segregation of minorities, particularly black people, in American society. Clear and eloquent usage of ethos, pathos, and logos is demonstrated by Anderson to convey his argument.
"Common Sense" was one of the most important pieces of literature in early America, because it was extremely influential to many people throughout all of American colonies. The colonist came to America to escape religious boundaries. They wanted to be able to worship God freely. Thomas Paine uses this to his advantage by using scriptural quotes, pathos, to convince his audience that it is common sense for the colonists to break completely with Great Britain. He says that "a monarchy is terrible, and to have a king is not only an unsuccessful way to rule a nation, but it is also a sin."
Sinclair perceived insensibility as a blessing in a time where life was hard and people had to work a lot. From reading this passage, I believe that insensibility is not a blessing because people need to be able to able to be emotionally affected. In my essay I will be discussing the uses of insensibility in the story with linking it to how it goes with my beliefs on how Sinclair portrayed this as a blessing. The definition of insensibility is the inability to be moved emotionally by something or it could be the inability to feel emotionally.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
1) Of the three primary units we have completed in this course, the most challenging unit for me was the argument (persuasion) unit. I was surprised at how much I struggled both in the pre-writing process and in the writing process. To begin with, because I love arguments, I had trouble choosing a topic. In the end, I decided to challenge myself with the policy that requires sex offender to be added to a public registry policy. Instead of going with my initial stance (opposition), I decided to flip the scrip and argue the opposite of what I believe (proposition).
Bitzer’s article discusses the rhetorical situation. A rhetorical situation does not mean merely understanding the context in which the speech is located. This mean that it does not refer to the setting in which the communication between speaker, audience, subject, and purpose takes place. A work is rhetorical because it is a response to a situation of a certain kind.

He uses ethos, logos, and pathos to argue his statement. Orlowski’s purpose is to express how social media manipulates people's emotions, views, and behaviors to make more profit. He adopts a disenchanted tone in order to emphasize that readers should be more cautious when using social media and make sure that his adult audience is aware of the effect it can have on their teens.
In his landmark essay, "The Rhetorical Situation," rhetorical scholar Lloyd Bitzer laid out some of the basic components of the rhetorical situation. Bitzer views rhetoric as a action and not just hot air and fancy words. He defines rhetoric as “A mode of altering reality, not by the direct application of energy to objects, but by the creation of discourse which changes reality through the mediation of thought and action.” He sees rhetoric as a way to learn how to get things done. In her essay, “I Had a Nice Time with you Tonight, on the app,” Jenna Wortham believes that social media apps are a helpful way to connect. Wortham swears by apps and is grateful that she can communicate with her boyfriend who is three thousand miles away. Yet some may challenge the view that Social Media apps are a reliable and effective method of communicating, Sherry Turkle stresses people are substituting online communication for face-to-face interaction. Although Turkle may only seem of concern to only a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the negative effects social media can have on people. In her eyes, nothing can replace person-to-person communication.
