Journal #1 While reading “The Joy of Nelly Deane” by Willa Cather. Nelly is describe as the prettiest girl in town of Riverbend and she was the happiest. Nelly seems to be free spirited and three of the women in this story was hoping she would go to their church and not the Methodist church. Everyone seem to like Nelly. Nelly and her friends are in a play called “Queen Ester” they have long practices took them three months to make it right.
In Eudora Welty’s autobiography, One Writer's Beginnings, employs emotional diction and imagery while describing the reading that took place in her childhood. Welty’s purpose is to describe the elder figures in her life that shaped her love of reading and how it impacted her later career. She adopts a sentimental tone while reflecting on Mrs. Calloway’s strict ruling of the library, her mother's fierce attitude, and her motivation to read. Welty begins her tribute by characterizing the strict librarian who commanded the library all by herself.
Charlotte was well-educated on the teaching of the literature more commonly, on the metaphor, for this reason it stimulated her passion for the love of metaphors. In fact, Charlotte thinks,”that Miss Hancock made the deepest mark upon me,”(Wilson,217), because of how exhilarating her momentum is when she educates her lovely pupils . Without delay, her preceptor made the entire class do an activity on writing a metaphor based on anything, as time passes she calls up Charlotte to decipher her extensive metaphor about her mother. Charlotte states,”My mother is a flawless, modern building, created of glass and the smoothest of pale concrete,”(219) meaning that her mom may seem flawless at first, but when examined more closely she is revealed to be unsympathetic and heartless. In that day, Miss Hancock paused Charlotte at the end of her class, before she proceeds to go home to inform her,’”if you need any help...with any other kind of problem, just let me know,’”(220) shows her sympathetic side of being caring, kind-hearted and compassionate.

In Delta Wedding, by Eudora Welty, Laura McRaven was a motherless girl, going to her cousin Dabneys wedding at the Fairchild families house without her father. She is brought to a home that consisted of many family members, with an especially large amount of cousins.
Lawrence, is a short story about a boy named Paul. This young boy lived with his unhappy mother, along with the other family members. The mother had grown to be unhappy because she had married for love instead of money and in her eyes, she was now unlucky as a result of that decision because they didn’t have much money. However, they lived a lifestyle that would appear to others that they were wealthy, but truly they were not. The young boy, Paul, had asked his mother about luck and if she was lucky herself.

The setting in “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” continues to convey the theme that women have been oppressed by society. Mabel faces oppression in the small english town where the story takes place. She explains that being a women does not matter as much when a family has money, but when they are poor she has to walk down the streets with her eyes low and avoid eye contact as she buys the cheapest item in every store (Lawrence 458). This shows that when a woman is seen as being represented by someone with power, in this case it is her father, then they are given a little respect. However, when a women is looked at just as herself and not as a rich man’s daughter she is not seen a colleague to men but as an object that is to be pitied.

In Miss Brill Katherine Mansfield intricates a fanciful tale of an older woman whose outlook on life is far from what she perceives. Although Miss Brill may fabricate the world around her through her actions and thoughts, it is her single epiphany that unwinds her delicate fantasy to reveal her real life. This epiphany distraughts Miss Brill to the point where she then abandons her usual routine to bury her fantasy and silently cry in honor of her fairytale life. Miss Brill’s actions convey that she is a carefree woman whose tedious routines exhibit her personality but as the evidence reveals, Miss Brill is actually a hateful woman who repeatedly insults the people around her. Lawrence alludes to the bizarre nature of the relationship between the children and their mother in the first paragraph “Everybody else said of her: "She is such a good mother. She adores her children. " Only she herself, and her children themselves, knew it was not so. They read it in each other's eyes.” (Lawrence, 1) So from the start, Lawrence sets up a tension between what society wants to believe and what actually is.

In this hard-hitting critique, Lawrence uses a few obvious messages to push points on his audience. These three messages in D. H.
