A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is a story of a woman who was unable to let go. This gothic tale is told by a narrator who is at Emily Grierson’s funeral and is recalling her weird personality and the events leading up to the funeral. Emily was an aristocratic woman who lived in the post-civil war era with her father until he died. He was the last member of her family and she refused to accept his death for three days until the towns people convinced her to bury him. Later in life, Emily meets Homer Barron and the two begin talking romantically. One day, Barron goes missing and the town can’t help but wonder what happened to him. Like Emily, I occasionally find myself in a position where I have a difficult time adjusting and moving on. The major theme in this short story; struggle with change, not only pertains to the characters’ lives but also my life in that unwanted and unexpected change can cause one to behave in abnormal ways. After the passing of her father, Emily found it difficult to adjust to living on her own and shut the rest of the world out attempting to control all aspects of her life. She was a member of a southern aristocratic family in the post-civil war era and her and her father still believed in the antebellum traditions and lifestyle lived by the previous generation. These values made it difficult for Emily and her father to choose a suiter for Emily as the man must come from an equal or higher social status. Her father’s death left her alone and confused because she no longer had someone in her perceived social class to relate
