In the short story read, “ A Rose For Emily”; by William Faulkner, there are many occurring conflicts. As conflict in literature is defined as the problem or problems that need to be solved, this concept is displayed variously. Throughout the story, Emily encounters many problems that lead to others. There are three different types of conflict in A Rose for Emily; man vs man, self, and society. The first conflict that is shown in the short story would be man vs man. Emily’s father never allowed her to be with, let alone see any male during all his years of living. He can be seen as a little “overprotective” as this way of parenthood would teach nothing but sadness in the mind of Emily since no males around meant she was always by herself or always with her father. The narrator stated that the people “remembered all the young men her father had driven away”, and “with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her”. During this particular conflict the protagonist is usually struggling with worldly problems. One example of this is when the city authorities came to Emily’s house to ask about her taxes and she said to the men, “I have no taxes in Jefferson”(Faulkner 79). Though she was referring to a man that had passed over 10 years ago that was close to her father, and helped with the taxes. Even though the colonel was dead Emily refused to listen to the authorities and was uncooperative. Next Emily faced another societal problem with the townspeople which was that she would not get rid of the foul odor that the people kept complaining about which was revolving around Emily’s house for days ; little did they know that the smell was Homer Barron.
