“A Rose for Emily” Literary Analysis In the short story “A Rose for Emily” William Faulkner discloses the story of a woman who is isolated from her community after the death of her father. Through the usage of characterization and symbolism, Faulkner identifies Emily as the protagonist that is unable to let go of the past and embrace the future. Characterization is how the author develops characters. Faulkner develops Emily as an isolated person “she went out very little;” after her father died (103). When the narrator declares, “She told them that her father was not died” it is concluded that Emily is gripping onto the past because she does not want to acknowledge that the circumstances are different. Emily’s isolation partakes in
