Emotions of Man (Whether Faulkner fulfills his ideals.) Emotions are the feelings that humans have in different settings. If someone has just died, the general feeling is sadness. Say someone got a job promotion over you, jealousy might be present. If a person were to break a priceless family antique, anger is the response. Despite these many examples of bad feelings, there are also so many good one's that can be used under varying circumstances. Happiness, compassion, honor and hope are just a few. William Faulkner, author of A Rose for Emily, tries to convey as many feelings as possible in this short text to help convey true American spirit. One sentiment that Faulkner utilizes in A Rose for Emily, is grief. Emily appears to have had her fair share of grief in her lifetime. First, it appears she never knew her mother. Then, her father seems to have been a bit controlling because she was never allowed any suitors. For a girl during this time, that was quite strange. This probably left Emily quite estranged to her peers and the community. Understandably, a very isolated life. “Just as they were about to resort to law and force, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly,” (pg. 821). Hopefully, joy is an emotion experienced by everyone during their lifetime. Emily is no exception. “Presently we began to see him and Miss Emily on Sunday afternoons driving in the yellow-wheeled buggy and the matched team of bays from the livery stable,” (pg. 822). The audience can conclude that from this insert, that Emily definitely had a crush on Homer Barron, the man whom she was taking the carriage rides with.
