If someone were to ask you the difference between the twentieth century and the twenty first, the list assembled would include things such as: technology, transportation, education, etc. However, most people don’t realize the difference in the responsibility taken on by teenagers. In 1942, young adults from the age of fifteen were being drafted from their families to train for the war so that when they reached eighteen they were ready to be sent away to bloodshed. In today’s society most young adults do have jobs and involvement in extracurricular activities, but nothing compares to the war they were brought up to know. As a young adult, it’s not completely rare to experience our own kind of war - against family, friends and even within ourselves. But both kinds of wars experienced made an impact on us and our loved ones. In A Separate Peace, Gene and Phineas were two young boys who were the remains of what peace looked like. They were described as being careless and wild, as sixteen year olds should be. The two boys were considered inseparable, till death did them part, and because of this an emotion went unnoticed until it grew to a bigger problem. Arika was the ideal daughter, straight A student, attended a private school, and she was beautiful. Anastasia was the daughter that was ignored because she didn’t exceed her parents expectations like her sister. The Moore family put up a wall to let others know that they were perfect, but on the inside everything crumbled down into dust. Arika was perfect, so when she developed the early stages of depression it was ignored. Her depression only grew to a bigger burden to the family when Arika made her war intercede with her sister’s adult life. The story is told through Anastasia's perspective.
