The setting of the novel, A Separate Peace, By John Knowles, is set in New England during World War II. The Author wrote this book to give us information about World War II. Also how things were at Devon’s Boarding School. The boys are training and learning about the war so the boys there can learn about enlisting into the war. The mood in the novel is basic. can be cool but it is really focused on having fun. The end of the novel is really dark and serious it really hits the spot. The two main characters in the novel are Gene Forrester and Phineas(Finny) But the the narrator of the novel is Gene he is telling us about his time at Devons Boarding School. Gene has a love/hate relationship with Finny they have known each other for along time but Finny does not know that Gene has a problem with him. Finny never really noticed it because Gene never showed him or told him or anything. Gene is also the protagonist in the novel he gives Finny smiles everytime he sees him but never told him anything he kept it a secret. It was apart of the training for the war but no one would do it besides Gene and Finny. Finny came up with a group to try to get people to jump out of the tree but no one did it besides Gene. Another main event that happened in the story is that Gene had pushed Finny out of the tree it was based on their love/hate relationship. Gene did not want to confess up to it but did toward at the end of the novel. Everyone knew that Gene had pushed Finny but he did not want to think or believe that Gene had did it because he thought that they were best friends and thought that Gene loved him.
