The narrator who is Gene Forrester returns his old Devon school in New Hampshire where he sees that it has been a long 15 years and everything is worn down, he says he doesn’t like the glossy coat because it makes the school look like a museum.He talks about his walk down gilman street describing every building as he walks. Gene also tells us how scared he was back in the 1940’s with the war he had two places that he would go to stay calm and one was a marble staircase in the school building and the other was a specific tree located along the banks. He can find the tree very easily because of the many scars on the trunk. Gene and Finny get their society started with the help of 6 other boys and Finny makes a list of rules that starts with every member of the society jumping off the tree, Even though Gene has so much fear of jumping out of the tree yet he still never objects to this rule. Along with his own Society Finny also participates in the athletic programs such as badminton and a new sport he made called Blitzball that uses a medicine ball he just found. The game is kind of like kill the man with the ball Whoever has the medicine ball is now the target of the other boys and they must tackle the man with the medicine ball. Blitzball start to get more popular and popular and Finny is one of the best at it. Finney is also a very good athlete he breaks the school's swimming record in his first try but no one else sees it except for Gene and he tells Gene to not tell anyone. Gene and Finny go to the beach even though it is forbidden. They spend the day at the beach relaxing, eating hot dogs and drinking a glass of beer. They both knew they were best
