There are many scholars that have studied and written about the collapse of civilizations. Ronald Wright is one of these scholars, and his book A Short History of Progress outlines many past collapses in an attempt to answer one key question: where are we going? Wright describes the predictability of each civilization’s collapse, suggesting that human nature is at the root of each one and that now our civilization stands at the brink of the same collapse. He goes so far as to say, “These years may be the last when civilization still has the wealth and political cohesions to steer itself toward caution, conservation, and social justice.” In this paper, I will argue that Wright is correct: our civilization is inescapably heading for collapse.
