He was a progressive American, his fields of expertise include sociology, eugenics and was considered a major figure of early criminology. Throughout his career he was interested in practical reforms in both at home and abroad. Ross taught at several universities including Stanford University, University of Nebraska, and the University of Wisconsin in which he taught sociology and eventually became chairman of the department.
