A Song of Ice and Fire marriage plot In the series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, the author decided to place the setting in what feels to be the middle ages, however in a fictional world. This book series was turned into a television series by the name of Game of Thrones following the same story. The books themselves feel very medieval-esque, so it is no surprise that something such as marriage would follow suit. The series has many religions that have various beliefs on marriage and the ceremonies that bind two people collectively in matrimony. In this series marriage tends to be used as a means of bringing two major houses together, making allies, a political union between kingdoms, etc. Thus making marriage more of a contract …show more content…

In Emma for example, marriage is used as a way to wrap up the novel and the engagements leading to marriages provide a sense of finality. Whereas in A Song of Ice and Fire it is used to introduce characters, houses, and used in politics to gain allies or resolve conflicts. In addition to a different use of marriage, Emma is set in a different time, the early 1800's instead of the middle ages. A contrast in the views of marriage in A Song of Ice and Fire and in Emma can then be realized. One main difference in views would be how the only way to marry for love in A Song of Ice and Fire was to be poor. On the flip side, in Emma, marriage could be for love at any social level. It still does remain mostly class based in that most people marry within their class like A Song of Ice and Fire, however it usually is for love more-so than personal or family gain. Arranged marriages were also not a factor in Emma, women though usually would accept a proposal, still had choice in the matter.
