Lockheed Martin’s Stance on Technical Communication Soloman Jones What have I seen in my workplace related to technical communication? Technical communication in Lockheed Martin can be summed up using one word, “email.” I have seen trends in the enterprise related to the use of email for a majority of technical communication. For example, major announcements whether it’s a memorandum for an organizational change or the introduction of a new process, technology, or site specific announcement are conveyed in emails. I view this trend in two contrasting ways. First, it’s a communication medium that has a far reach. One email can reach an employee base in my company of over 100,000 employees in a matter of minutes. The speed of this communication method is alluring, however it creates a since of comfort and overuse. Secondly, although this method is fast and far reaching, its purpose is often diluted due to the frequent use of email and the number of email messages on average every employee receives daily. I agree with the usage of email for some communications however I wonder if other methods would be considered more “generationally” sociable. For example, my company introduced the ability to use mobile devices for corporate communication several years after the technology was mainstream. I participated in one of my company’s leadership development programs and I observed some of the early career professionals who were identified for this program leave the company for other opportunities. I understand that technical communication was probably not the only factor in their decision to leave however I believe that it was a contributing factor.
