Redesign Outcomes The subject is Social Studies for fifth grade students. Students will be able to speak about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They will be able to describe and teach about his nonviolence system to fight and gain freedom for African Americans. Students must be able to describe his life and the obstacles he faced. They must provide specific examples of highlighted events of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. contributions using various multimedia materials. The students will have an understanding of the Jim Crow laws. Finally, students will become familiar with the speech “I Have a Dream.” The 21ST century skills for social studies that students will demonstrate is critical thinking and problem solving, contextual learning skills, communication, creativity and innovation skills and information and media literacy. “The Common Core State Standards provides a consistent educational structure that teachers can tailor their instruction but will have to follow” (Tyler, 2009). Creating small groups will assist with differentiation in the class. Students can use peer learning to stay motivated and keep up with others (Burnaford & Brown, 2014).They will each write down the first thing that they know about Nonviolence. After this activity is done students will prepare a timeline marking the important dates of his life. I will read out loud important facts about Dr. Martin Luther King, and provide students with a list of important key events that they should include in their timeline. Finally I will discuss with the student Martin Luther King’s contributions to the civil rights movements and Jim Crow Laws. Students will view photos of segregation laws and will answer the following questions. What do you think of the Jim Crow laws? How do you think these laws made the Whites feel? How do you think these laws made the Blacks feel? Summary
