Book Report #4 The book I read this quarter was Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood. Its Lexile level is 680. This book is about a 11-year old girl named Gloriana Hemphill, who now comprehends how much racism is a problem in her hometown in Mississippi in 1963.
Civil rights issues stand at the core of Anne Moody’s memoir. However, because my last two journal entries centered on race and the movement, I have decided to shift my focus. In her adolescent years, Anne Moody must live with her mother, her mother’s partner Raymond, and her increasing number of siblings. As she reaches maturity, she grows to be a beautiful girl with a developed body. Her male peers and town members notice, as does her step father Raymond.
In the novel Copper Sun by Sharon Draper, Polly is an indentured servant who wants to escape her class and Amari is a slave who has had her family ripped away from her. Polly grows from a narrow-minded young woman who looks down on slaves into a more tolerant young woman, likewise, Amari grows from a naïve young woman who does not trust her instincts into one who is wise beyond her years. Throughout the novel, Polly grows from a narrow-minded young woman who is disdainful of slaves because of how she was raised, because they prevent her from getting a job, and because they seem less intelligent than she into a more tolerant young woman who understands that slaves are the same as she is on the inside. Polly was raised to see herself as being above slaves and closer to her rich employers than the other indentured servants and slaves that she lived with: as her father told her, “the company you keep will rub off on you, Polly girl.
She explains how happy, but conflicted because her parents refuse money from her and live as homeless people. She writes the memoir to work through her feelings and share’s her story. Some topics that I could identify in the text are: poverty, teenage pregnancy and child rights. The issue of poverty is portrayed from the beginning of the book to the end.
She is reminded of the violence that torn not only communities apart but families as well. How the social norms of the day restricted people’s lives and held them in the balance of life and death. Her grandfathers past life, her grandmother cultural silence about the internment and husband’s affair, the police brutality that cause the death of 4 young black teenagers. Even her own inner conflicts with her sexuality and Japanese heritage. She starts to see the world around her with a different
The first section deals with hard headed African American women. Using prominent historical figures like Rosa Parks and Condoleezza Rice to help push the narrative along. The first poem in the section was “Red Velvet” in which she narrates the struggle of one one seamstress that became an important figurehead of a movement. She goes from there to poems about victims of hurricane Katrina in “Left” and finishing off the section with some choice words about George W. Bush in “Plunder” and one of the people under his command in the “Condoleezza Suite”. all the poems in this section
The author, Sarah B. Pomeroy, writes this book in a style that resembles a textbook with many examples. She structures it in a timeline chronologically telling the events and breaking up the subject matter. The book lacked personality, although she had strong opinions that came through when writing the book, the style of writing lacked personality and was hard to read at times. The subject matter I found very interesting, considering it correlated with my class currently. At times, while I read this book, I found myself angry with men because of their brutal and thoughtfulness of women.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is a memoir told in verse. It details Woodson’s feelings of being stuck between South Carolina and New York. The memoir uses poems to illustrate growing up as an African American during the time of the Civil Rights movement in America. In addition, it chronicles Woodson’s struggles with literacy and eventual accomplishments. Ruta Sepetys wrote a New Yorks best seller novel called ¨Between Shades of Gray¨. In this historical fiction novel a family is taken from their homes during the Holocaust and has to endure many challenges. One of the main characters is a 16 year old girl named Lina whoś bravery, hope, and faith can be seen throughout the novel. In the novel ¨Between Shades of Gray¨ Sepetys creates two main theme, that hope can be found where there is despair and where there is fear there is faith. One theme that can be seen throughout the novel “Between Shades of Gray¨ is that hope can be found where there is despair.
The author’s craft used in the story is imagery. Liliana Heker’s writing style helped me connect with the characters in the story. For example, our the summer, my sister, aunt and I visited a particular pool in Essex County and we were not welcomed and looked down upon because we were the only black visitors. That experience made me feel uncomfortable.
The story takes place at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in America, when desegregation is finally achieved. Flannery O’Connor’s use of setting augments the mood and deepens the context of the story. However, O’Connor’s method is subtle, often relying on connotation and implication to drive her point across. The story achieves its depressing mood mostly through the use of light and darkness in the setting.
It is very important that writers are able to send a message to their reader with their book. Authors best do this by bringing about empathy. In order to send this message, authors often develop strong characters that go through various problems and struggles. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird, shows this very well with its characters Scout Finch and Tom Robinson. This book helps the readers learn from the character’s reactions to their problems.
Banned Books Essay Banned Books Week is an annual event starting on September 23 and ending on September 29 celebrating the freedom to read books freely no matter what topics are present throughout the book. The purpose of Banned Books Week is to bring the community together and express and seek ideas in books even if they are considered unorthodox. Throughout this celebratory week publishers, librarians, booksellers, journalists, teachers and more all celebrate the freedom to read and access information that they desire to explore. The outstanding novels by the names of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie are both banned books in many middle school and high
The novel’s protagonist, Janie Crawford, a woman who dreamt of love, was on a journey to establish her voice and shape her own identity. She lived with Nanny, her grandmother, in a community inhabited by black and white people. This community only served as an antagonist to Janie, because she did not fit into the society in any respect. Race played a large factor in Janie being an outcast, because she was black, but had lighter skin than all other black people due to having a Caucasian ancestry.
The novel follows Stevie an eleven year old girl who lives in Southside Chicago throughout her middle and high school years. Stevie goes through the social pressure of her peers and family to tell her how to act, think, and look. Slowly throughout
