At this current point, Mariam, the other main character, came to terms with her demoralizing life and marriage. For years, she endured a troublesome marriage with Rasheed, a rather conservative and short-tempered man, that ranged from verbal abusement to fatal-like torture. The marriage ultimately faltered because of one discrepancy: Mariam’s infertility. Rasheed has endeavored numerous times to bear a son after his first son drowned before Mariam’s marriage. Without a single male offspring, Rasheed has lowered Mariam to a lower rank, one that is clustered with picky disappointments and inhumane practices. She sought for this achievement twice in her life: one with Jalil, her affluent father, and one with Rasheed. Nevertheless, on both of these occasions, this endeavor faulted spectacularly. The former consisted of Jalil “selling” Mariam to Rasheed in an arranged marriage, and the latter composed of Rasheed assaulting Mariam in countless manners. Therefore, Mariam, from these exasperating experiences, has developed a more pessimistic attitude towards her life; she has brushed all of her ambitions aside in the hopes of salvaging the minute bits of happiness in her life. Mariam evidently demonstrates a central theme in this story: resilience. Undoubtedly and unfortunately, Mariam’s life has been full of disarray, and she has endured every one of such sorrow. Nevertheless, these events have not prevented Mariam from conglomerating the fragments of her life into something meaningful: a marriage with Rasheed that can be slightly jovial. However, in this quote, Mariam does illustrate a “dry, barren field” in the distance.
