Consequences of suppressing one’s true identity: Exploring Chapter 37 (pages 275-279) from A Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini. When one alters their identity to match their surroundings or conform to what people around them think, they risk losing themselves. They risk losing their originality, and what makes them special. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, although the citizens were pleased with the idea of the Taliban governing, they failed to recognize their real hidden agenda. After the victory over Mujahideen, the Taliban took control over the people of Kabul. They set restrictions that forced males and females to change who they are and how they lived their lives. “‘When they come, they will clean up this place. They’ll bring peace and order’… ‘Let them come,’ he said. ‘I for one, will welcome them with rose petals.’” These quotes were said by Rasheed, he was expressing his happiness because of the arrival of the Taliban. When the Taliban took over they started making changes in the community. They made separate rules for both genders to follow. Males and females each had a different role in their society. All of the members of the Taliban consisted of “decent Muslim boys” (Rasheed, pg.274). Since the group has mainly been exposed to males while growing up, their bias on the male superiority influenced a lot of the regulations they set. Males like Rasheed were given a lot of power because of this bias, they were considered the dominant gender. Rasheed was the head of the house, he was the leader and he would make the decisions in the family. “Rasheed leading them from one bus to the next.”(pg.277). In this quote the author wrote that Rasheed leading all four of them to their desired destination, indirectly stating that Rasheed was the leader of the family.
