“He was a coward. My father. He didn’t have the dil, the heart for it” (21) in Khaled Hossini novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. She is referring to her father who had disowned her as soon as she got pregnant by Jalil. He had been so disgraced that he packed his things and left for Iran never to be seen or heard. Nana is also quick to point out that Jalil, like her father, did not have heart since he had bowed to pressure from his family, wives and in-laws and chose to send her off by building her a kolba away from his mansion instead of protecting her. However, throughout chapter one, it is evident that many characters have shown dil, heart in one way or another including Jalil.
Dil refers to heart. It refers to the character to do a good, touching
