Vince Lombardi’s name is literally on the Super Bowl trophy. They named it after him because he won the first two Super Bowls ever to be played. As the Packers head coach and General Manager from 1959 to 1967 he led the Packers to five NFL Championships and won the first two Super Bowls. His career record with the Pack was an amazing 105-35-6. Lombardi at first was an assistant coach for the New York Giants. So when the Packers owner was looking for a Head Coaching position. At first when the team’s owner told the Packer committee that he found Vince Lombardi they all asked, “who the heck is Vince Lombardi?” But, it didn’t take long to figure that out. He ordered the jerseys to have a “G” on them for “Green” Bay. But, some say the “G” stood for greatness. Lombardi’s offense was the basic run first then pass offense. Lombardi’s most famous play was the “Lombardi Sweep.” The play was a run and it was where two of the biggest guards pulled to their right or their left and either Jim Taylor or Paul Hornung would run with the ball behind them. At the team’s first meeting he told the team, “I have never been on a losing team, gentlemen, and I do not intend to start now.” Like he said Lombardi actually never had a losing season. In his first NFL season Lombardi finished 7-5 and won the Coach of the Year Award. In his third season Lombardi won his first of many Super Bowls with the Packers.
