Authors have many tools in their arsenal in which they use to intrigue and challenge many readers. One of the styles that can become the most challenging for a reader is Allegory, it’s a story that contains multiple meanings other than the authors intended purpose. This type of writing contains three critical points that can change the meaning of every allegory, the first are characters, the second are objects, and the third is events with deep significance. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Garcia Marquez’ is a magical realism short story in which the author uses characters and their actions to show symbolism and allegory meanings. Immured in a chicken coup, the man is held captive due to his appearance. The couple that took the old man in take advantage of the fruitful spectacle created by his appearance and decide to charge admission to the show. Rumors of the man transpire and the townspeople emanate to inquire about the man and decide that he must be an angel; however this does not cease them from treating the old man brutally. Every day the angel is treated horribly by curious residence who perceive him as a disgusting animal. Another act comes to the market place and he is replaced by a spider-woman. Finally he then gains his strength and fly’s away. The allegory in the story exposes the unruly and unpredictable side of human nature that include behavior, greed, fear, and delusion.
