Human life is taken as an important factor in everyday life. Both stories have characters that mistreat people for their own gain. The old man is cast aside and mistreated even when he healed Pelayo’s son and made his family rich likewise, General Zaroff is cruel and kills people to feed his addiction. In the stories “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: A Tale For Children” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Conrad, address importance of human life as minimal. Although Pelayo is kinder to the old man than the other villagers, he is certainly not full of compassion and charity. Pelayo doesn’t club the old man as his neighbor woman suggests, on the other hand, he does pen the old man in the chicken coop and charges admission for the crowd to see. Pelayo also stand by while people throw things at the old man and continue to mistreat him physically. “The only time they succeeded in arousing him was when they burned his side with an iron for branding steers, for he had been motionless for so many hours that they thought he was dead” (Marquez 497). Despite the many material advantages that Elisenda is now able to buy because of the money raised from showing off the old man, her attitude toward him is primary one of annoyance and disgust. Indeed, the old man became such a nuisance to Elisenda, she even says, “hell full of angels” referring to her having to spend so much time with him near her home.
