Comparing themes in two different texts can develop one big central idea. In the stories “Thank You, Ma'am” and “A Victim Treats His Mugger Right” by Langston Hughes they both demonstrate the theme of treat others the way you want to be treated. Even though both stories have a different plot each show traits of the same theme.

In the first story, “Thank you, Ma’am” the plot was a teen boy tried to take a women's satchel and instead of getting him arrested she takes him to her house for a meal. The women assures the boy will remember him. The text states “When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones” (Hughes). Next, the man gives the boy the wallet and tells him to take the jacket too because he might get cold. Then the man offers the boy to go to dinner and the boy gives the man his wallet back. During the dinner the boy realizes the man is being nice to everyone in the restaurant. The boy thinking he owns the place but the man assures him “Well, haven’t you been taught you should be nice to everybody” (Garofalo). This explains to the boy that if you want people to be nice to you, you have to be nice to them. Also when the man tells his mother what happened she says “I figure, you know if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right” (Garofalo). His mother doesn’t understand his actions but knows he does them because he wants to be treated right.no matter what the situation. This also demonstrates the theme of treat people the way you want to be treated.

In Conclusion, “Thank You Ma’am” and “A Victim Treats His Mugger Right” both show the same central theme. Each story had its own way of showing how to treat others the way you want to be
