“While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions”(Stephen R. Covey). There are a variety of choices in life, for instance, we answer multiple choice questions in the exam, we should choose a favorite major on campus or choosing a suitable job is important when we get into the workplace. We need the courage to make choices, at the same time we are required to bear all the consequences, whether they are good or bad. In order to handle things properly, we should learn to make correct choices. So before choosing, we have to know whether our decisions are valuable and meaningful. “ A Wagner Matinee”, by Willa Cather, is a short story about choices. The story begins with a letter from Uncle Howard, and he wants the narrator to take care of Aunt Georgiana, who has an opportunity to return to her hometown recently. After the narrator reads the letter, he begins to recall the experience of his aunt in the story with flashbacks. Thirty years ago, Aunt Georgiana meets and falls in love with Uncle Howard, who does nothing and just drifts along.
