“The Glass Castle” is a biography, drama written by Destin Daniel Cretton; it portrays a young girl (Jeanette Walls) and her family as they struggle in poverty stricken towns with a mother who is an eccentric artist and her alcoholic father who she blindly puts her faith in. The film was released on August 11, 2017 and features Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts among others. The big question, “What do I think about “The Glass Castle” film? The film was dissatisfying overall, I did not feel same emotional attachment that I felt with the book. They did not show enough of Jeanette and Rex’s connection to each other.
In the book each chapter is written in a different person’s point of view. The first point of view helps understand the characters better, make a story stronger and get the reader to feel connected to the characters in some way. In this well written interesting book, Oats concentrates on the story of a slave who wanted to be free right from childhood. By using Turner as his main character, Oates creates a lot of pity on the predicament of slaves in the hands of their controlling masters. He frequently uses the word "n-gg-r" to stress the contempt under which Nat Tuner labored, or the word "darkie" to indicate how even the best of whites spoke patronizingly of blacks slaves. The reader is informed of Hazel’s thoughts when she had forgotten why she had tears in her eyes. Before Harrison Bergeron flashed across the t.v. screen, George was thinking about his criminal son. Therefore, the reader is clued in to the thoughts of both Hazel and George Bergeron. Third person is distinct from other points of view, because the reader can look into the minds of every character, and the story is told unbiased.
While reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the relationship between Rex and Rose Mary walls and their children became to be very intriguing. Specifically how they raised their kids without holding anything back, an idea reinforced by a famous Walt Disney quote This quote describes how “trying to shield” children ) from reality” wouldn’t “do them any favor.” This idea was enforced by multiple occasions from the book which include letting Jeannette cook by herself at the age of 3, even after getting serious burns from cooking, letting the kids do whatever they wanted as long as they “Used common sense”, and the incident where Rex let Jeannette go upstairs with a stranger because he knew she could defend herself. The first incident revolves around how Jeannette was allowed to cook, even after having serious burns from from cooking. ”She had to get right back on the saddle.”
In the memoir The Glass Castle, journalist Jannette Walls tells the bittersweet story of her childhood struggles and what it was like growing up in poverty. “I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes.” (pg.34) Walls grows up in a family trailed by broken homes, and she focuses on her untraditional childhood with her parents that were too self-centered and lazy to have steady jobs.
