“I wish I had a weave.”
The words I tell myself whenever the weather chooses to not cooperate with my hair. Pouring rain. A drizzle. Humidity. All dreaded.
My mother obtains unmanageable, thick curly hair that takes hours to tame. On the other hand, my father acquired silky, shiny hair. As for myself, I gained distinct wavy locks that tend to go through a pack of hair ties every month when there is undesired weather outside. Normally, on a sunny and dry afternoon, my hair is curly and may be tied with two twists of a hair tie. Add rain and humidity into the mixture and hair ties snap in seconds. Fortunately, through the years, I learned to understand the products and management of my locks so as to keep tamed and save hair ties from breaking.
A hair tie is a gadget that most females and males with long locks take for granted. It is a circular, elastic band that goes through an abundant amount of stress. There is only so much hair and twists this band can resist before finally snapping in half. Many factors such as the weather and type of hair it sustains act as a role in its deterioration. During this time period, kids experience new makeup tricks and style their hair according to top trends. I was the confused sweaty girl with frizzy hair after gym class every other day. My hair ties snapped constantly throughout the day. It got to the point where I would question if the brand of hair ties my mother bought or my actual hair was the issue. How could other girls have perfectly tied locks? I stopped attempting to fasten my hair and let my afro-like locks do as they pleased.
