The AP Calculus AB exam measures students’ understanding and knowledge on the concepts of calculus. It will take approximately three hours and fifteen minutes. It will test students’ ability to apply calculus concepts along with their ability to work with numerical, verbal, analytical, and graphical representations of mathematics. The AB exam also includes questions based on algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and elementary functions. There will be two different sections, each worth 50% of the exam score, with two separate parts in each, on the AB exam. The first section is the multiple choice section. In part A, students are allowed only 55 minutes to complete 28 questions without a calculator. In part B, students are allowed only 50 minutes …show more content…
At NIU, if a student scores a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam, they will earn credit for Math 229 (Calculus I). If I were to attend NIU to study business management and administration, I would be required to take Math 221 (Calculus for Business and Social Science), Math 229 (Calculus I), and various accounting courses. Math 221 is an elementary treatment of topics from differential and integral calculus, with applications in social science and business. Math 229 is a first course in calculus. At Northern Illinois University, students must take the Math Placement Exam(MPE) to find out what math courses they should take. Students with Advanced Placement credit for Math 229 (Calculus 1) may take courses with a Math 229 prerequisite without any further testing. The MPE looks at the questions students answered correctly, weighting some of them more heavily than others, and factor in any information it has from other sources such as the students’ ACT math sub score. The Math Placement Exam uses all of this to place students into one of the five math groups according to the kind of initial math courses each student will likely find most …show more content…
At ISU, if a student scores a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam, they will earn four hours of credit for Math 145 (Calculus I). If I were to attend Illinois State University to study Business Administration, I would be required to take Math 120 (Finite Math), Math 121 (Applied Calculus), and various accounting courses. At ISU, there is a math placement test called the “COMPASS Math Placement Exam.” If a student scored a sub score of 27 or higher on the Math portion of the ACT, then that student is exempt from taking the COMPASS math placement exam. If a student scored a 26 or lower on the Math portion of the ACT, then that student must take the COMPASS placement exam to find out which math courses they should be placed
