One of my strengths upon entering the AP Language and Composition Class was grammar. Throughout my schooling years, I was always able to comprehend English grammar concepts very easily. Over the year, I have enhanced these skills, now I can describe a clear distinction between the types of sentences (exclamatory, imperative, and declarative for example) and I understand ideas such as clauses and warrants as well. Another one of my strengths is speaking. I have a strong ability to express my ideas and opinions to a large group of people (my class.) I enjoy doing this, and I also like to listen to other people’s ideas and try to form ideas from their point of view. In the AP Language and Composition Course, I have developed many skills over the course of the year. However, one of my most significant improvements I have made in my reading skills is understanding text structure (such as cohesion and syntax), as well as understanding the purpose/message of a passage of text. At the beginning of the AP Language and Composition course, my writing skills were primarily weak due to the fact that I would state several claims in my essays without providing warrants or backing. Being introduced to Toulmin’s chart gave me step by step directions on how to improve my score on essays simply by providing evidence to my claims. Another issue I had in my writing was that I was stating too many generalizations throughout my essay. For example, on an essay about my position on the background of criminals, my thesis would’ve most likely been something like “not all criminals come from a troubled background.” I have now learned to explain my claims in a more specific manner by addressing why I believe in my thesis, and provide hard evidence behind it to convince my audience that my claim is
