Abercrombie and Fitch a renowned company founded on June 4, 1892 by David T. Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch is one of the most well-known apparel retail companies in the U.S. The company was started by David T. Abercrombie on small waterfront shop in Manhattan called Abercrombie Co. Abercrombie’s store specialized in hunting and outdoor gear supplies. Mr. Abercrombie felt that there was a need of a store that specialized in what people love most outdoors and hunting. A couple of years into his business, a well-known lawyer Ezra Fitch, whom was a regular customer, bought a big share into the company; a couple years later in 1904 the shop officially became Abercrombie and Fitch. Abercrombie sold his shares in the company; the establishment continued to expand. Eventually, in 1910 Abercrombie and Fitch became the first company to sell apparel for men and women. They later opened a 12 story store in Manhattan that included a golf school, and shooting range. They eventually created the logo of “The Greatest Sporting Store in the World.” As the store reached the highest point in Company history, they continued to expand westward into California. Although this company seemed to thrive, they eventually reached their nadir when the company’s sales dropped; Company chairman John Ewing refused to cut sale prices. In 1977 Abercrombie and Fitch filed for bankruptcy and officially closed their doors; however, Oshman, a sporting goods retailer claimed the store. The company then reopened as A&F and tried to protect themselves from going bankrupt by selling modern sports ware for tennis and golf, but sales were still dramatically low. As Abercrombie and Fitch struggled to maintain their store profits; Abercrombie and Fitch was purchased for 46 million by Limited Brands.
