Abernathy was a dog. He was not any dog however, he was a purebred bloodhound. He came from one of the finest pedigrees in all of Kentucky. He had the shiniest coat of all his brothers and sisters. He had the loudest call and droopiest face. He was, for all intents and purposes, perfect. So much so that he began to become swelled with pride. He looked down upon the other dogs. He scoffed at their mangy coats and their flea ridden fleeces. He laughed at their pointed noses and their wimpy barks. He developed quite the inferiority complex. As Abernathy grew so did his perceived self perfection. One summer's day Abernathy was bought by a farmer from a few counties over. After a long ride Abernathy arrived at his new home, Flanders Farm. There were black labs, and blue merles, beagles, and terriers of all sorts. Abernathy was amazed until he saw a familiar face, Fred. Slowly walking around tail drooping and tongue hanging out of his mouth. He truly was a disgrace. Abernathy knew he would beat every dog there, but he relished the fact that he was going to get beat his ridiculously slow neighbor. All of a sudden everyone was lining up, it looked as though the competition was going to begin. The dogs were lined up and a judge called out the rules. Then suddenly there was a loud bang and dogs took off in every direction. Left and right, this way and that way. Into the forest and through the fields. The competition had begun and Fred was excited. As the night progressed Abernathy's luck wasn’t so apparent. It turns out he wasn’t as perfect at racoon hunting as he thought. By the end of the night Abernathy had only caught 7 racoons. Not the best haul he thought to himself, but that was of no matter. He figured if he did that well that surely everyone else did worse.
