This led to another separation with me and my husband when he returned to Philadelphia in November. I eventually recovered and returned to Philadelphia the next year, I stayed for the rest of my husband’s term. Event 6 I had remained a supportive spouse after my husband became the president in 1797. Some critics called me Mrs. President. since I was the nation’s second first lady I kept a busy schedule when I was in Philadelphia, the country’s capital at the time. I rose early to tend to family and household matters and spent much of the remainder of the day receiving visitors and hosting events. After the election had happened our son Charles had died of alcoholism. With great sadness, that We had soon moved to the country’s new capital, Washington, D.C., where we became the first residents of the White House. I wrote many letters to family around this time, shedding light on the early days of the new capital and complaining about the unfinished state of our new home.
