Zlata Kolosunina English III CP Period 7 Mr. McCarty 10/23/15 Compare and contrast between Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams In the play "Crucible" the authorities, Arthur Miller, shows the difference between two leading female characters: Elizabeth Proctor-kind, loving, caring wife of John Proctor, and Abigail Williams- hypocritical, immoral girl, trying to get what she wants in any possible way. The desire of Abigail to be with John led to all the bad consequences. One of them was the death of John Proctor.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. Arthur Miller wrote the play because he was inspired by McCarthyism. McCarthyism was the hunt for communists that was taken too far. In The Crucible he presented a universal message. He was comparing how communists did exist and witches did not, but yet they were both taken as serious.
Through harsh rejection and preposterous delusions, Abigail Williams abused her good name and became the fault for the bitter ends of many for something they were not guilty of. I have reread significant sections of The Crucible several times and have read and analyzed it to the best of my ability on multiple occasions. Once reading this book in my Honors English Course at the number one high school in the state of California, we carefully analyzed the characters, going as far as even making character charts, to understand them and their intentions much better. Abigail WIlliams, who is at fault for the Salem Witch Trials, held verbal power and influence over the girls which led to the sentenced hanging of many, and acted unwisely on the galling
During the late 17th century a total of 200 people were accused of participating in witchcraft, while 19 people lost their lives to the mass hysteria. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a group of girls start a huge uproar in Salem, Massachusetts when they start screeching about Salemites being associated with the Devil. Throughout the play write, it shows the consequences of mass hysteria and how it puts people's lives in danger. Abigail Williams causes a wave of mass hysteria and because of her trickery, innocent people have died by her and the other girl’s actions, for this Abigail is the most unforgivable character in The Crucible.
Abigail is vengeful, selfish, manipulative, and overall a magnificent liar. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible American play from the 1990s reveals how hysteria supplants logic and enables people to believe false claims. In The Crucible mass hysteria is shown to allow the people of Salem to believe that their neighbors who they considered outstanding people are now committing absurd and unbelievable acts. I believe that Abigail Williams could have ended the mass hysteria in Salem by coming forward and telling the truth about what happened in the woods with the other girls, not accusing innocent people of witchcraft, and admitting to pretending she was bewitched.
“Character Analysis over The Crucible” Arthur Miller is a commonly-known playwright, most famous for his 1953 play, The Crucible. The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. However, Miller made a few alterations to the historical members of the Salem society in order to suit his dramatic purpose in The Crucible, particularly Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Samuel Parris.
The community in which someone lives will often have definite effects on the people living within it. This means that you can often connect someone's behavior to their surrounding area. However in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, you can not blame the puritan society that Abigail Williams resides in for her actions. The root of her estranged actions and decisions is her past, personality, and her pride.
Abigail Williams’ Influence Is it okay for a person to lie and hurt other people just to keep him or herself safe? In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams lies, a lot, to keep herself safe. Throughout the story, many people are accused of witchcraft. When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.
Whether a citizen wills to gain power or keep their power, accusing citizens of witch craft seemed to be the way to achieve power. Ultimate power and the ability to send anyone to their death becomes the same thing in Salem. Constantly the people in Salem struggle for power. Mr. Danforth, the judge in Salem has the characteristic of being power hungry, He maintains his power by sending people to death row. The Salem Witch trials are the response to power hungry individuals.
Anymore in today’s world people can not always believe what others tell them. For example, in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, when one of the girls accused someone of being a witch, everyone believed them, when in reality the person accused wasn’t really a witch. One of the girls in particular that accused others of being witches was Abigail Williams. When Abigail accused others of being witches, everyone listened and believed. This is how Arthur Miller used the character Abigail Williams in The Crucible to represent the devil figure; in doing so he sends the message that people can not always believe what others tell them.
Abigail is willing to accuse any one in her path of witchcraft even if it means taking the lives of those close to her. Abigail Williams’ emotional desire guides her actions even if it conflicts with morality. Abigail williams is driven to do unthinkable things because of her love for John Proctor. Abigail works in the Proctor’s home and while doing so she finds herself attracted to John. Abigail’s obsession with Proctor leads them to have an affair, which they try to keep
In the novel “The crucible” representation of a disturbing and powerful play based on a true event has been shown clearly by the author Arthur Miller. The main objective that the author tries to show from that drama is how feeble the human beings can be and how gluttony of personal gain can become dangerous in the current society. During the early times of 1600’s, people believed that if you did not go to church each week to adore God, then it was obvious that you were worshipping the devil. But according to the play, accusations of witchcraft or devil worshipping began with a group of girls who were held dancing in the forests. This was an illegal act according to the rules of theocracy in the town of Salem.
When people think of the play, “The Crucible”, they usually picture the witch trials and women being hanged, but Arthur Miller depicts the witch trials in a completely new light. He shows through a story that the witch trials were much more than just people calling others witches. There was deceit, pain, greed, and more. Through the play, we follow the character, Abigail, observe her actions and their consequences. We witness the lives of people she impacts, what happens to them, and how many times she lies to get her way.

" Abigail Williams exemplifies the claim made by Philip K. Dick using her strategic wielding of the truth to gain a favorable outcome for herself. Abigail is an unmarried orphan in the town of Salem, Massachusetts and a complex character that doesn 't fit into the rigid expectations of how she should act, like other female characters in the novel. On the surface, Abigail is may seem to be one-dimensional in her lack of remorse or empathy yet it comes to be understood later in the play that there underlying forces that drive Abigail to take the actions that she does.
