Life is like a mountain range with its many ups and downs. Each person has their own trek amongst the mountains, and some of these treks are more difficult than others. When faced with these difficult treks amongst the mountains, many people do as Dale Carnegie once stated; “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. ” In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the characters Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor each find themselves facing their own mountain, and it is from these uphill tests that each character becomes transformed.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. Arthur Miller wrote the play because he was inspired by McCarthyism. McCarthyism was the hunt for communists that was taken too far. In The Crucible he presented a universal message. He was comparing how communists did exist and witches did not, but yet they were both taken as serious.

In Salem at the time it was a modest town brimming with Puritans. In the town of Salem, little secrets, jealousy and massive hysteria spread around the town.
Adolescent minds are the most intelligent kind of mind. A young brain is filled with creativity, imagination and innocence. Though the thought process of a teen is assumed to be selfish there are other factors involved. A combination of these characteristics seems almost dangerous. One would undermine a juvenile to use these qualities to manipulate the court for their own selfish wishes or pleasures.
The Crucible takes place in 1692, in Salem when several women have been accused of witchcraft including John and Elizabeth Proctor’s maid, Abigail Williams. Abigail was later fired, not for dancing naked in the woods and caught by Parris, but for having an affair with John Proctor. Once caught, they accused the townspeople and how witchcraft possessed them. A huge court session begins. To determine whether or not someone was innocent or guilty, the girls and Abigail would distress the ones they thought were guilty by screaming and fainting.
Abigail says, “I never called him! Tituba…,” after Reverend Hale asks her about calling the devil (40). As soon as she sees trouble, she blames Tituba. After Tituba accuses Sarah Good of being with the Devil, as an attempt to receive a smaller punishment, she inspires Abigail
There are several characters in The Crucible who use the witch hunts for personal gain. The worst amongst these villains is Abigail Williams, who is very manipulative. Although Abigail is a young, beautiful, teenage orphan she will not stop until she has John Proctor to herself. John is a middle aged man who is married to Elizabeth Proctor, but committed adultery and had an affair with Abigail. She creates lies to save herself and hurt others.
Abigail Williams’ Influence Is it okay for a person to lie and hurt other people just to keep him or herself safe? In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams lies, a lot, to keep herself safe. Throughout the story, many people are accused of witchcraft. When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.

In the beginning of The Crucible, Abigail Williams was all over John Proctor. She was very noticed in the town because the town heard rumors about her and John Proctor. Abigail was on the verge of being charged for witchcraft and she did not want anyone to think she was a witch. Then, she decided to go to John proctor to tell him how they should be together and that he wanted to be with her. She did not like that fact for John did not want to be with her.
In 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts the Salem Witch trials began. This all started because a group of girl were found dancing in the woods naked and calling for the devil. Abigail Williams was one of these girls. Abigail is not the good girl everyone thinks she is. She has some flaws that include jealousy, mendacity and spitefulness.
One common question about The Crucible is how Abigail Williams is the most evil force in the play. It is shocking when a girl talks back to authority out of disagreement, but few go as far as Abigail Williams. While she may only be 11 years old, her manipulative and vengeful personality allows her fool her Uncle and later turns a whole town against each other. She is really a master of manipulation and trickery, and she gets herself into affairs without punishment and has threaten all who oppose here. Abigail really is the devil in human form.

However, sometimes, people can be both mentally and physically free and imprisoned. Throughout The Crucible, Arthur Miller epitomizes the reality that every human being can be imprisoned yet free.
