Abigail: The Victim of Trauma
When speaking about trauma, no one says it better than Laurell K. Hamilton in her book Mistral’s Kiss. She states, “There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” In the drama The Crucible by Aurthur Miller, Abigail Williams is a young woman in Salem who is seemingly the villain of the town. All the accusations of witchcraft and the deaths are all pinned onto Abigail. Many people immediately blame Abigail for the havoc just because she is such an easy target, but is she really to blame? In reality, Abigail Williams in the The Crucible is simply just an innocent victim who is insecure and misunderstood.

Parris was a supposed father figure for Abigail and considering he was not married their servant, Tituba, was most likely her mother figure. When it comes to Abigail and Parris’ relationship there was no compassion or fatherly love. In order for people love her and follow by her side Abigail had to manipulate them. Her acting out and accusing people was finally putting attention on her. She was finally feeling the comfort of being protected even though it was protection from something that isn’t even there, the “witches” in Salem. This attention from the court and townspeople was filling the void she has held for so long. This was finally giving her a reason to release all of the anger she had built up from all of the hurt she carried from her past trauma and
John Proctor had an affair with Abigail when his wife Elizabeth was very sick. Abigail is a young girl in her teens and John Proctor is a middle aged man who was suffering with the burden of his wife being sick. After the affair Abigail got attached to Proctor and expected him to feel the same way. When John Proctor came into town to see what all the commotion was about him and Abby ended up talking.
